German conservative leadership candidate Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, a close ally of Angela Merkel, is the favorite to succeed the German chancellor as head of the Christian Democrats, according to a new poll.A survey by broadcaster ZDF published Friday found that 38 percent of CDU voters are in favor of Kramp-Karrenbauer, currently the party’s secretary-general, taking over the party leadership — an increase of 3 percentage points since the last poll two weeks ago. That puts her ahead of fellow challenger Friedrich Merz, who received 29 percent support — a drop of 4 percentage points — and Health Minister Jens Spahn, who is polling at 6 percent. Some 12 percent of respondents said they “don’t care.” Survey respondents who support the CDU also found Kramp-Karrenbauer to be the most “credible” and “sympathetic,” and polled highest in the category “represents the interests of the everyday citizen.”Merkel announced in October she would stand down as CDU leader, after the party suffered heavy losses in a regional election in the state of Hesse. She has said she plans to remain chancellor until 2021, but will not run for the CDU leadership post at a party convention in December.Kramp-Karrenbauer is seen as the continuity candidate and someone who is likely to keep the CDU on a centrist course. Spahn and Merz, who is a former leader of the conservative bloc in the Bundestag, are seen as leaning more to the right. Some 1,000 delegates will make the final decision at a party congress on December 7.
The Chronicle of Higher Education: He was locked in a van in England with violent criminals, repeatedly, during his late 20s, says Adrian Raine, lifting a fork of salmon ravioli from his plate at a tony restaurant on Walnut Street. “I was at the maximum-security prison in Hull,” says the psychologist, now in his 50s, and his job involved attaching polygraph-type sensors to the prisoners’ skin to measure their agitation as he bothered them with loud sounds and flashes of light. His lab was in the back of the van, he says, “and the guards were very concerned these men would commandeer the vehicle and escape.”Their solution? “Take my keys away and lock the doors from the outside.”Raine, now chair of the criminology department at the University of Pennsylvania, a few blocks from the restaurant, stops eating for a moment to remember. “So there I was, in this very tiny space. And I kept watching the needles these sensors were connected to, for I imagined that the first sign these men were about to rush me would be the needles starting to swing wildly as the men got excited and prepared to attack.”They never did. Raine always got out of the van unscathed, but the slightly built, graying Englishman has never strayed far from the company of killers, wife batterers, and psychopaths. He has spent a career trying to spot ever-earlier signs of dangerous minds—clues to bad behavior even before a criminal commits a crime.Read the whole story: The Chronicle of Higher Education More of our Members in the Media >
His next test in La Liga will be against rivals Atletico, at the Vicente Calderon next weekend. Sport EN Cristiano Ronaldo did not score for Real Madrid in the 0-0 draw with Malaga and the Portuguese hasn’t found the net in four of the five La Liga games this season. He still has five goals, but all of them came in a 6-0 win over a limp Espanyol side at the Cornella El Prat. Against Malaga he tried to score time and time again, but could not. His discontent at being unable to beat Kameni was tangible. He tried to score an incredible 14 times, without success. 27/09/2015 CEST Upd. at 14:17 Against Sporting, Granada, Athletic and Malaga he has been incapable of finding the net. His run reminds us of the 2010-11 season where he had his worst goalscoring start as a player of Madrid, scoring three times in six weeks of La Liga.
He blasted home after a wonderful Bebe equaliser had canceled out Abraham’s first-half opener. Espanyol were made to pay for these huge misses when Bebe blasted home a bolt from the blue, rammed home from the left-hand sid of the box, the strike flying past the helpless Pau Lopez. Upd. at 22:21 They eventually took the lead when the outstanding Marco Asensio zipped into the box and crossed for Abraham to turn home, although Yoel Rodriguez could have been better between the sticks. Rik Sharma Hernan Perez’s brilliant volley gave Espanyol a crucial win over Rayo Vallecano in a real relegation six-pointer. Then it was Gerard Moreno’s turn to fluff his lines, holding onto the ball well in the box but firing straight at Yoel. Another brilliant run by Aesensio carved open Espanyol but Burgui, another Real Mdarid loanee, fired wide of the near post when he should have drilled home. It was enough to win it despite some late Rayo pressure and takes Espanyol 14th with 31 points, while the visitors are 17th on 26th, equal with Granada who are 18th. Espanyol started the game more intensely, getting into Rayo’s box a few times but failing to find any firm chances. 07/03/2016 CET But as time ticked on, Espanyol levelled with a brutal blast of their own, Perez rifling home a dropping ball on the edge of the box on the volley. He made amends, in part at least, by tipping a Victor Sanchez shot around the post, which was bound for the top corner.
