Tunnelling success for Liebherr cranes

first_imgThe 500-tonne capacity crawler crane lifted and positioned the TBM components, which weighed up to 370 tonnes. The TBM had been used for the A19/N.640 road widening project at the Porto Empedocle in Sicily, where Gradito is based and operates a fleet of 19 cranes for lifting and hoisting operations.Meanwhile, Mediaco has used its Liebherr LG 1750 mobile crane to lift components of a tunnel boring machine as part of TBM components for the Grand Paris infrastructure project. According to Liebherr, the Grand Paris infrastructure project will see the development of 200 km of underground railway as well as 68 stations. “Like all crane contractors in the Paris area, we are expecting a healthy rate of orders over the next few years,” said Patrick Meublat, technical director for the crane business at Mediaco. “The jobs for our Liebherr cranes around Paris over the next few years will be dominated by assembling and dismantling tunnel boring machines and hoisting railway and road bridges.”The majority of the new metro routes are scheduled for completion by 2030 but the project as a whole will last several decades, said Liebherr. www.liebherr.com www.graditooleodinamica.itwww.mediaco-groupe.comlast_img read more

DB’s high speed programme regains momentum

first_imgTHE ANNOUNCEMENT on February 14 that German Railway is to proceed with the stalled Stuttgart 21 project and construction of a new high speed line over the 65 km between Wendlingen, southeast of Stuttgart, and Ulm suggests that it has managed to garner strong support for its programme of major investment projects. In this case the Land of Baden-Württemberg has agreed to fund the initial phase of work allowing the start date on the DM8bn scheme to be brought forward to 2004. This will require the Land to pay up to DM900m in interest and other payments before the federal government assumes financial responsibility for the project in 2011. The ambitious scheme will see Stuttgart’s terminus replaced by an underground through station linked directly to the new line.Further evidence that DB is entering another phase of major expenditure came with its decision to add to its substantial ICE fleet. It confirmed on February 16 that it would announce ’shortly’ contracts for 13 more ICE3 trainsets worth DM500m for use on the Klast_img read more

Civil lawsuit begins over 2004 Pelee Island plane crash that killed 10

first_imgAlso killed were the pilot, Wayne Price of Richmond Hill, and his fiancee Jamie Levine of Los Angeles. An investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada determined that the pilot Price was under stress and sleep-deprived when he decided to take off in a plane that was overloaded with a number of husky men, hunting dogs and luggage and “contaminated” with ice.The plane, 576 kilograms over the maximum allowable takeoff weight, took off at 4:40 p.m. for the short flight to Windsor Airport. It crashed into the ice of Lake Erie a few minutes later. In 2014, on the crash’s 10th anniversary, Ronald Spencler’s widow, Diane Spencler, spoke with Postmedia about the tragic crash and its aftermath.“Each year on the anniversary of that sad event, I silently acknowledge my husband Ron and the tremendous loss my son and I have suffered,” Spencler said.“I have moved forward with my life since that unfortunate time, but I haven’t forgotten the impact his passing had on us as a family.” The eight passengers killed, along with the pilot and his fiancee, in a January 2004 plane crash off Pelee Island. A jury in a civil trial is expected to start hearing evidence next week about a 2004 plane crash off Pelee Island that killed 10 people in one of the worst air disasters in Southwestern Ontario history. The family of Bob Brisco, one of the victims, filed the civil lawsuit against Georgian Express Ltd.There are also multiple individuals named as defendants in the lawsuit as well as the Owen Sound Transportation Company Ltd.A six-person jury, with two alternates, was selected Tuesday at the Chatham courthouse. Jurors are expected to begin hearing evidence Monday, with the trial expected to last 2 1/2 weeks.A court official declined Tuesday to provide Postmedia News with the statement of claim filed by Brisco’s family, saying its release could potentially bias jury members before evidence is presented in the civil trial. The same official also cited pre-trial motions presently being argued as another reason for not releasing the document.Brisco, 46, was with friends on a hunting trip with four other men from the Kingsville area when the Cessna Caravan crashed Jan. 17, 2004.Ronald Spencler, 53, and Walter Sadowski, 48, both of Windsor; Fred Freitas, 38, and Larry Janik, 48, of Kingsville; Brisco, 46, and brothers Ted Reeve, 53, and Tom Reeve, 49, of Chatham; and Dr. Jim Allen, 51, of Mitchell’s Bay were also aboard Georgian Express Flight 126.last_img read more

3D Interfaces on the Web – Useful or Novelty?

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#Analysis#web Related Posts 3D interfaces have been around since the Web began – and more than one dot com fell bythe wayside partly because of an over-reaching 3D interface (cough, boo.com). Indeed aswe noted inDecember, virtual shopping malls are still alive and kicking. But is 3D of any use onthe Web, or is it just another cool novelty feature?3D does have some real world use and there are 3D software companies emerging that areproving very profitable. As Glen (comment #4) pointed out in our Decemberpost, 3D has its place in enabling in-depth views of products. In fact a New Zealandcompany is making waves doing just that. RightHemisphere sells Product Graphics Management software, that allows people to viewproducts in either 2D or 3D. This has many uses, from marketing to education to productdocumentation. Also Right Hemisphere technology is used in Adobe Acrobat, for 3Dtechnical documents.Example of Right Hemisphere 3D usage3D is undoubtedly proving useful and popular with Second Life and other virtual worlds. Also Robb(comment #8) in our December post pointed to the MOJI Intelligent Messenger – which features 3Dartificial life forms, within an Instant Messenger that combines AI and computationallinguistics. With game playing or social communications, 3D could prove to be a winningfeature – because if done right it enhances the user experience. 3D photos and photo effects also seems to bea nice value add. The jury is still out on virtualshopping malls though, although they may actually work inside an existing 3D world suchas Second Life. As Emergence Media noted in response to our December post, 3B has built a virtual mall in Second Life –featuring affiliate stores by the likes of Amazon.com, eBay, Old Navy, Delia’s andBarnes & Nobles. 3B was a company that caught my eyeat the Web 2.0 Summit last November. At that time it was promoting its use as a socialnetworking tool, which is kind of what Second Life is anyway. What about other practical uses of 3D, such as 3DDigg (which just makes me dizzy) or in search, as noted today by Google Blogoscoped.Web statistics software VisitorVille 3D is another one. While allof these are undoubtedly cool, it’s questionable whether they add much in the way ofpractical value. Having said that, Microsoft is exploring 3D interfaces as itsnext generation of search. In November, I had a chat with Microsoft executives SteveBerkowitz and Christopher Payne about their new 3Dversion of Virtual Earth. As I noted then,Microsoft is positioning Virtual Earth as “the beginning of the 3D Web” – a quote fromSteve Lawler (General Manager, Virtual Earth Business Unit) during the launch of VirtualEarth.ConclusionSo all in all, right now 3D interfaces seem best suited to virtual worlds like SecondLife – and things that complement that (like 3B’s shopping inside SL). But 3D undoubtedlyhas its uses in product management, as Right Hemisphere is proving. Also I think 3D hasits place as a value add for communications and photos. Where 3D is not quite ready forprime time is with general browsing things like search, shopping on the Web, and serviceslike Digg. I have a feeling the time will come when those things are commonplace, butcould be a few more years yet. What do you think? Kevin Rose Apologizes for Sexist Joke on Diggnation

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#news#web Digg founder Kevin Rose issued an apology this morning for statements he made on the latest edition of his video podcast Diggnation. Just after the 4 minute mark in the show Rose and co-host Alex Albrecht were making jokes about men getting into physical fights with women and Rose made a statement that a particular act of violence was appropriate as an act of retribution in some circumstances. An excerpted transcript and the text of Rose’s apology sent to us by email when we inquired this morning are below.Rose said the following on Diggnation:“there is only one time you can strike [a woman -] if she kicks you in the balls, you have the ability and the right, to punch her in the teat – it’s just like that – it’s kinda like tit for tat [Albrecht talks then Kevin again] It hurts them, it does too – or take a scissors to the teat” (Kevin makes cutting action with hand)The part of the statement about cutting was offensive, juvenile and inappropriate, even in jest. It’s sadistic and the double standard that society applies should be clear: if a woman went on Diggnation and talked about how it’s ok to cut men’s genitals with scissors that would be a very big deal to a lot of people. It was also ironic given that Digg and Rose in particular had banned a number of Digg users last month for making offensive, sexist comments on a Digg post about an article in FastCompany by Saabira Chaudhuri about women in technology.Rose sent the following reply this morning in response to our inquiry about the incident.“I’d like to apologize for some comments I made in the latest episode of Diggnation, which came off as insensitive on the topic of violence towards women. Alex and I have always viewed Diggnation as an outlet to push the limits in a comedic fashion. Obviously, violence against women is serious and something we don’t advocate in any way.”Why It’s Not OK to Say Things Like ThisWe’re glad Rose has publicly apologized for the inappropriate statement and hope that he’ll act as a good role model for the many young people who watch his show. Violence against women is endemic around the world and the kind of violence that Rose joked about goes beyond self-defense and enters into the realm of all-too-real tragedy for many people. Pop-culture humor making light of such violence contributes to a cultural climate in which some people mistakenly consider this type or related behavior acceptable. No one is perfect but when some lines are crossed it’s important to discuss why such statements are inappropriate. We hope that Rose and Digg can continue working to make Digg, and the increasingly large part of the world that it influences, a better place. Anyone who reads the comments on the site regularly knows that both Digg and the world we live in have a long way to go. Censorship isn’t necessarily the answer, but discussion, apologies when needed and not saying stupid things in the first place are probably big parts the best solution. Using GDB as a Poor Man’s Profiler

first_imgHow to Write a Welcome Email to New Employees? Most people are aware that you can debug your own programs with gdb, but did you know it’s also great for understanding performance problems in programs that you don’t even have the source for or that you can attach to running processes at any time? When I notice one of my machines is running slowly, the first thing I do is run the top unix command from the terminal to see where the time is going. topThis shows me that Firefox is taking up about half of my CPU, but doesn’t tell me much about why. To get that information, make a note of the process number, press q to quit top, fire up gdb with the -p switch and that identifier, and it will hook into the running process:gdb -p 69881This pauses the program, so now run the command thread apply all bt to see what it was working on at the instant it was paused:thread apply all btEven though we don’t have the source code, you can often get a decent idea of what the code is related to from the function names. There’s a lot of threads here, but the one we’re interested in happens to be the main thread, listed last. You can see that the stack trace has functions that look Flash-related, and the lowest level ones (highest up the screen) appear to be image-drawing code. This is a clue that it’s spending time in Flash image rendering, but to be more certain we need to gather more samples. To do this, enter the c command to allow the program to continue running, and after a second or two press control-c to pause it again and do another thread listing:Here it’s no longer in Flash, but it’s still doing image rendering, so the odds are that Firefox is bogged down by something graphics-related. You can repeat this process multiple times to gather more and more evidence, and you’ve got a poor man’s version of a profiler. The place I probably use this approach most often is when a program appears to be completely hung. By following exactly the same steps you can often spot if it’s truly in an infinite loop, or if it’s just making really slow progress or swapping memory like crazy. If it is in an infinite loop, the clues from the backtrace function names are often enough to figure out what provoked it, and how to avoid running into the same problem in the future.
