Benitez’s three goals leads Azusa

first_imgAZUSA – The high school soccer season may only be half over, but the Azusa High School girls team is already making a statement in its effort to win a third consecutive Montview League title. The Aztecs remained undefeated in league play by following three narrow victories with an easy 6-1 win over visiting La Puente High School on Wednesday. Leading the way for Azusa was standout senior forward Brenda Benitez. She scored three goals and had an assist. Benitez, who transferred from Gladstone last year and didn’t play soccer, now has 14 goals on the season to lead the team and the league in scoring. Second-year Azusa coach Stephanie Lemberg knows just how good her team is, but hadn’t seen the Aztecs have that one breakout game yet this season. “I think overall we have a great team and the best team in the league and I think we can win it if we stay consistent,” Lemberg said. If Benitez – who has attracted some Division I interest – and Campos stay consistent, Azusa (7-5, 4-0) should make it three in a row. “(Benitez and Campos) just work amazing together … and pass well together and find each other,” Lemberg said. center_img It only took seven minutes for the two seniors to give Azusa a quick 2-0 lead after each scored an early goal. La Puente’s senior forward Venus Partida scored in the 24th minute to cut Azusa’s lead to 2-1. Benitez, who is a head taller than most of her opponents, scored on a great header from Campos after a corner kick to give Azusa a 3-1 lead. “We really understand each other and on corners she knows to kick it to my head,” Benitez said. La Puente (2-8, 1-3) also received a solid effort from senior goalie Ashleigh Sanchez, who made a couple of saves to prevent Azusa from putting the game away early. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
